The Arts
Visual Art
Our Art department is a busy two teacher department in Virginia College, offering Art as an optional subject at Junior and Senior Cycle. Art is also offered as part of the transition year and leaving certificate applied programme in our school. Students compete in the Credit Union Art competition holding successful titles at local and national level along with creating many pieces which can be seen through out our school. The Art students work closely with the Music department designing sets for our schools bi-annual musical productions staged in the Ramor Theatre Virginia.
Creative Schools
We aim to fosters an innate love for the creative arts and strive to offer many opportunities for our students to develop their creative sides while studying in our school.

Virginia College is one of the leading schools in Cavan under the Creative Schools Initiative. We are going into year 3 of the Creative Schools Programme. After a very successful year1, where we ran our fun-packed creative week we are working on a new creative event this year.

A number of our students have written their own play and are currently working with play writers and stage directors to stage a production with acting, singing and dancing which will be recorded and published on our school website.
Literacy
A large emphasis is placed on developing student’s literacy skills in Virginia College. Students submit their creations to many writing competitions annually. We are proud of the successes of our students who have won awards in poetry, short story, and essay writing, with a number having had their work published.
Music
The Music department in Virginia College offer Music as an optional subject at Junior and Senior Cycle. Music and drama are also offered as part of the transition year programme.

Students participate in many music and drama workshops such as rap, music technology, drumming, drama and dance workshops annually in the Transition Year Programme. We are proud to say that many of our students are high achievers in instrumental and vocal exams with the Royal Irish Academy of Music and hold European and World titles on the accordion and in Irish dancing.
School Musical
Virginia College is closely linked with the Ramor Theatre where we stage our bi-annual musical productions and school concerts. We have staged musicals such as Grease, The Sound of Music, Hot Mikado, Little Shop of Horrors, Back to the 80’s, Disco Inferno and Popstars in the past.

Our school musicals are student led productions, under the guidance of Ms Talbot and Ms Goldrick. Our students are involved in all areas of each production from set design and costumes, to staging and lighting. The memories created for students during our productions last a lifetime.

Virginia College Choir
Virginia College has an active and award-winning school choir with over 60 members, who meet weekly for rehearsals. The choir regularly performs at concerts, competitions, choral festivals and events on the national and international stage, having performed in the past in Poland and Germany.
Virginia College Rock Band
Virginia College Music Department offers budding young rock stars the opportunity to perform and compose their own music for our school rock band. Rehearsals take place each week and our student band perform at our annual concerts.
